Artist Statement:
As I transition between girlhood and womanhood, I have begun to question the expectations placed on me in a society where girls are taught to act like women yet women are treated like little girls. The more I try to navigate this transition and figure out what is expected of me, the angrier I become.

Through my work, I aim to understand my feelings of confusion and anger and my fear that I will never be seen as anything more than a little girl. My work questions what society deems “girly,” and uses objects often associated with girlishness, to investigate the gap between my experiences growing up and society’s stereotypical perception of girlhood. My work also centers around the pressures I place upon myself.

I am destroying my femininity before it can be criticized and trying to hold on to my girlhood before it fades away.
